It’s not easy. In reality it’s downright hard! The call to be peacemakers is not one that we are eager to embrace. When we have been hurt, vengeance and hatred seem to come more naturally and feel much more justified. Yet these do not reflect the character of our father in heaven.
One reason we find it so hard to forgive others is our belief that we are perfect. That we are right, have never done anything wrong, and would never hurt anyone. But the truth is that by our actions, intentionally or unintentionally, we have hurt others and we have hurt God. In sending his son, Jesus, we received forgiveness from God. He made peace with us. So how are we called to embody the Character of God to others? By extending that same undeserved forgiveness and to make peace with those who have hurt us.
It’s not easy. In reality it’s downright hard! But it is through the acceptance of our own need for forgiveness that we are enabled to forgive others. Let us pray today for God’s help to become peacemakers, forgiving others as we have been forgiven.
