A new year is dawning! A new year brings new possibilities, new opportunities, and new adventures to pursue. Like many people you may be thinking about the resolutions you want to make for the new year. But there is a hesitation in the back of your mind. You and I know that many of our new years goals don’t make it past the first week of January. But this year is different. This year you will benefit from the wisdom of the Proverbs to strengthen your goals.
A Proverb is a small saying packed with great practical wisdom. They detail a truth or a principle about our life that points us towards success. Fortunately there is a whole book in the bible filled with this wisdom. The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom for God’s people. The Proverbs are the core principles of living a Godly life. Like a father imparting advice to his children as they step out into the big wide world, so to the Proverbs are God’s wisdom imparted to us. To strengthen our goals for 2017 let us hear from God’s book of wisdom and follow through on the advice we receive.
The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty
Start with a plan. Making a strong plan is the starting point for achieving your goals. Take your time to develop a detailed plan of precisely what it is you want to achieve. Be specific. Then map out the steps you are going to take to progress towards the end goal.
Be realistic and make sure your goals are achievable. Define what success looks like for you and avoid comparing your results with other people. Great achievements don’t happen overnight. But you will succeed in reaching your goals if you are diligent in following your plan.
All who are prudent act with knowledge, but fools expose their folly
Knowledge is crucial to success. Chances are that if you are aiming to improve in a particular area then you are not already an expert on the topic. So you are going to need to learn the skills required for success. Seek good advice to build your knowledge and to refine your plan.
One of the best and most under-utilised resources to learn from is our own mistakes. Don’t be defeated by past failures. Act with knowledge gained from your past mistakes. Learn from the experience, identify the aspects that didn’t work for you and change your strategy to overcome those obstacles.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans
The absolute key to success is your commitment. But this proverb gives us a distinctly different approach to commitment than you might expect. The wisdom in the Proverbs teaches us that instead of devoting our commitment to our plan, we are guided to commit our plan to the Lord.
This is the game changer. We are to put God first in all of our plans. Our plans can be selfish, vain, or come to nothing, but God is an unshakable foundation. If our first commitment is to God then we are strengthened by faith to continue to pursue the desires He has placed in our hearts. When we focus on our commitment to God first, He then establishes the plans that we set forth.
Kingdom Warriors, strengthen your new years resolutions with wisdom from the Proverbs. Be diligent in making a good plan. Take time to learn the keys to success and act with that knowledge. But above all do it for God, let your success bring Glory to Him.
